With their business busier than ever, the folks at Pumpin-N-Dumpin Septic and Excavation in Trumansburg, NY decided it was time to design a logo and a lite branding system for the company.

Challenge
Pumpin-N-Dumpin is a successful septic repair, installation, and excavation company operating in the Finger Lakes. After discussing the brand / company’s needs with the client, a few things stood out:
- While they were getting a lot of septic system repair and installation work, potential clients did not know that the company did excavation work.
- The most immediate, and potentially the most critical, use-case for their new logo was its addition to the company’s vehicles. In particular, they had recently purchased a new purple pump truck which the brand needed to be designed around.

Process
First was the noun exploration phase. Creating a list of words and short phrases related to the brand helps generate ideas for brand marks and lockups. In this case, we focused on “excavation” as opposed to “septic”-related nouns, due to the client’s desire to focus more heavily on those services. After coming up with as many nouns as possible, it was time to start sketching. Dozens of sketches were created and the most promising of them were shared with the client.

Together, we decided on two options — the first, a monogram designed within the outline of an excavator bucket, and the second, an excavator silhouette — to explore and refine further.

After some more conversation with the client, a final decision was made and I completed a few final design tweaks on the first option, the “monogram.” With that, Pumpin-N-Dumpin had their new logo system. A unique, versatile mark and text lockup that could be used across a wide range of applications.
“It was great working together, and we are very happy with how it turned out. We can’t thank you enough.”
