The Attention Span team and I assisted Hormel Foods in starting the Mower County-based Hometown Food Security Project in an effort to end food insecurity locally. Our first task: research and produce a comprehensive report on the current state of hunger both county-wide and across all Hormel Foods production facilities.
Functional Design
While this report for the Hometown Security Project and Hormel Foods needed to be aesthetically beautiful, the main design challenge was displaying / conveying a large amount of information in a digestible yet scholarly way. The Attention Span Design team and I applied our experience with information visualization/ design to created dozens of charts, a design system for stats, and more.
With support from our research and editorial teams we also created a number of maps to help display specific information about the county by zip code.
Results
We created 110 pages full of information that was used to inform years’ worth of nonprofit work from where to focus efforts to how to allocate resources. The organization is still active and using the report along with new on-the-ground insights to make critical decisions about the best ways to move their cause forward.
